Cabin on the Prairie

©1994 Sandra L. Reay

1.
There's a Cabin alone on the Prairie.
Must have been there a hundred years or so
And the wind's blown away all the shutters
And the roof's falling down with the snow.

2.
Surrounded by tall grass and sage brush
Underneath the biggest sky you've ever seen
The cabin is all that is left there
Just a marker to somebody's dream

chorus Who were the people who built it?
What happened? Where did they go?
There's no one to tell me their story
So I guess that I'll never know

3.
Life must have been hard in that cabin
No water for miles it seems
No trees, no neighbors, no fortress
Just a place they could live with their dreams

chorus Who were the people who built it?
What happened? Where did they go?
The cabin won't tell me their story
I can guess it but I'll never know

chorus Who were the people who built it?
What happened? Where did they go?
The cabin won't tell you their story
You can guess it but you'll never know

coda The cabin won't tell you their story
You can guess it but you'll never know
You can guess it but you'll never know

  Optional last verse:
4.
When the people, the smog, and the traffic
Make you long for a place far away
Just remember that lonely old cabin
And dream that we'll live there some day

"I was driving cross country and passed a Cabin on the Prairie. The first three verses and chorus (with variations) were written while driving. The last verse was written a few months later, after folks in a songwriters' circle said the song was too short."
