chorus 1 There was a time when the desert was in bloom
  Moonlight shone on Apache Plume
We fell in love beneath the strawberry moon
There was a time when the desert was in bloom

1.
Hand in hand, we picked a careful way
Through prickly pear and yellow blossom sage
You kissed me there, underneath the laughing stars
And a wonderland of sand and stone was ours

chorus 1

2.
The summer sun grew too hot to bear
I closed my eyes to protect them from the glare
The blossoms died, vanished in the shifting sands
Like the love you gave me vanished from my hands

chorus 2 There was a time when the desert was in bloom
  Moonlight shone on Apache Plume
The cactus wren sings a mournful tune
There was a time when the desert was in bloom

chorus 1

coda
There was a time when the desert was in bloom

"I went to a garage sale on Apache Plume Street and started playing with the soft rhyme: Plume and moon. I wanted to write a moon-June-spoon song without using any of those words. The 'strawberry moon' is the first moon in June. So, I was able to skip 'June' and 'spoon'." — Sandra L. Reay

Award:
Apache Plume was a Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival Songwriter's Showcase Finalist in September, 1997.
