1.
Sun in my eyes, cold wind in my hair
With a sign that just said "please"
Watching couples in sports cars go racing by
  And families in S.U.V.s

chorus I was a Hitchhiker on love's highway
Didn't know which way to go
Until you cruised by in your four-wheel-drive
Found me standing by the road

2.
You saw me and stopped, we talked for a while
I jumped in and said "Let's go"
Pedal to the metal, no looking back
  Doing 90 down a one-way road

chorus

bridge Eyes on each other, blind to the signs
  Seems like I never learn
No flashing lights. No siren song.
Not long till we crashed and burned

chorus Now I'm a Hitchhiker on love's highway
Didn't know how far we'd go
When you cruised by in your four-wheel-drive
Found me standing by the road

coda
Oh, you cruised by in your four-wheel-drive
Left me standing by the road

"I was hanging out at the car dealership, in 2001, watching them rearrange the 4-wheel-drives in the showroom. I came out of there with the chorus. From time to time I worked on it, but couldn't come up with verses. In summer, 2005, I sang the chorus to a couple of band mates who both offered to write the verses. In spring, 2006, a third band mate said, 'Just write the verses yourself!' so, I did." — Sandra L. Reay

John Stewart, B.J. Suter and Christy Wessler contributed to the lyrics. Ernie Martinez arranged the song and changed the third verse into the bridge.

Sandy met John Stewart in Sept. 2006, and told him that she stole a line from him for a song she'd just written.

With a twinkle in his eye, he smiled and patted her shoulder, then said, "You better have a good lawyer."

She said, "I didn't take the line from one of your songs. I took it from your introduction to 'July, You're a Woman.' It was on a live concert recording."

He said, "Well, then, that's okay. Tell me about the song."

She said, "It's called "Hitchhiker,' and starts 'Sun in my eyes, cold wind in my hair / With a sign that just said please.'

He interrupted and said, "That's a great line. That's a wonderful line! This is a great song because it has such a great line in it!"

She said, 'Yes, I know. I stole it from you.'"
